Positive link between literary activity and mental health Positive link between literary activity and mental health Positive link between literary activity and mental healthSchoolsNew research from the National Literacy Trust (NLT) charity has made a strong case for a positive link between literary activity and mental health. The report claims that those school pupils who enjoy reading, and engage in writing for pleasure, are three times as likely to have higher levels of mental wellbeing than their peers who find the activities a chore. Statistics in the report disclose that 39.4 per cent of the pupils who enjoyed reading and writing had high levels of mental health and wellbeing, compared to just 11.8 per cent of who died not enjoy the activity. The report makes the bold claim that those children who are less engaged in reading in writing will be more likely to struggle with mental health. More than 50,000 children were polled in the survey, with the results showing that 40.3 per cent of those children with higher than expected reading skills had above average levels of mental wellbeing; while just 13.1 percent of those children with lower than expected reading skills had comparable levels of wellbeing. Members of the National Literary Trust were quick to stress to vital importance of reading and writing in children`s lives: `Children and young people today face a multitude of pressures at school, at home and in their social lives.` Jonathan Douglas, the director of the NLT, went on to say that teachers and parents must do all they can to encourage children to develop good literary skills: `It is imperative that we do everything we can to enable our children to develop the resilience they need to cope with life`s challenges ? and our latest research shows that the joys of reading and writing can be hugely beneficial.` The report had some interesting, and disconcerting, information about how able children were at dealing with stress and anxiety in their lives. It found that more than a quarter didn`t know how to adequately deal with stress, and that more than one in five children were unhappy with their life. The importance of reading in a child`s cognitive development has been understood for decades. Stories help enrich and develop a child`s imagination - they give them the opportunity to imagine themselves in a multitude of different scenarios, testing and expanding their moral compass , while allowing them to emphasise with different characters in the story. The general secretary of school leaders` union NAHT Paul Whitman, who recently replaced Russell Hobby, recently commented on the report: `The importance of reading for pleasure is well understood. Schools devote time to this, to allow pupils to become lost in a good book, as the saying goes.` `But this time is in danger of getting lost now, too. Changes to the curriculum and higher stakes tests and exams mean that reading for pleasure can be squeezed out of the school day. `This disadvantages low income families the most, because school is a point of free access to books and often those children who would benefit the most from reading for pleasure don`t have that many books at home to choose from.` The report discloses that pupils in Greater London, the North East, and the West Midlands had the highest levels of mental wellbeing, compared to children in the South West and Yorkshire who had the lowest. I have not had an opportunity to read the report for myself at the time of writing - it seems to be too elusive for my acquisition. Of course reading and writing are important for a child`s development - it enriches their very thought processes, widens their vocabulary, and of course is thoroughly entertaining! I suspect the link between mental health and literacy activity will have to be researched more fully, before any definitive claims can be made. Discover How This Young Student Has Gained Independence in Math Discover How This Young Student Has Gained Independence in Math Laiba Yousafzai, 11, Level O Math 11-year-old Laiba has been enrolled in the Kumon Math Program for just over two years. During her time at Kumon, she has not only gained a sense of independence, but also a level of confidence in math that has helped her achieve her academic goals. In just two short years, she went from starting at Kumon Math Level A, and is now on Level O studying differential calculus! She has even set a goal of completing the program within two years! Laiba has taken the skills sheâs learned in Kumon and has helped her classmates solve complicated math problems. By helping her peers, she is laying down the foundation for one day achieving her dream of becoming a high school math teacher. Laiba may be academically advanced for her age, but just like any other 11-year-old girl, she enjoys keeping busy with extracurricular activities. Not only is she competitive on the soccer field and basketball court, she is also an active member in the school choir and art club. Talk about a well-rounded kid! Because of her accomplishments both in-and-out of the classroom, she was just one of 56 Kumon Students from the United States, Canada and Mexico to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference in Calgary, Canada. We had a chance to talk to Laiba about her experience with Kumon and how she enjoys being challenged in math. What keeps you motivated in Kumon? I started seeing the benefits of Kumon when I first started the program. I also wanted to go to Kumon because I saw my older brother Umar attend and he saw great results. I was having trouble with my grade level in math and I saw Kumon as a great opportunity. When I started Kumon, I noticed myself enjoying and excelling much more than I was in the past. Iâm studying at a higher level in math alongside my sisters Amna and Shabano, which once seemed impossible. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has given me the skills to be an independent learner and not having to rely on anyone for help. I realized that no matter what, all your hard work will pay-off in the end. As soon as I compared them, I realized that I had been using an incorrect method to solve the questions that I had gotten wrong. I felt proud of myself for figuring out how to understand a new concept without quitting and asking for help. What advice do you have for other Kumon Students? It would be so great if our work experience were to be a glistening straight line of continuous work, punctuated by promotions and superior accomplishments. The truth is that for most of us, life happened causing numerous career zigzags, sputters and interruptions. In todayâs economy, there is little tolerance for less than perfectly aligned skills and experience. That leaves many of us pondering how to develop a resume that doesnât get trashed instantly. Letâs review some of the resume challenges and discuss what you should do: Worked for the same company more than once. This does happen more than you realize. You get laid off, rehired, laid off and so on. There are two ways to address this: Lay out your resume in chronological order by dates you worked. Treat each entry as if it were a separate company. If the work for the same company had no interruptions by working for other businesses, simply group it into one entry, but be clear with your work dates. Work Gaps.The only way to avoid a gap in your work timeline is to fill it with volunteer work or temp work. Both experiences are âresume worthyâ and will show you really donât have a gap, because you were working. Volunteer experience.Some people think that non-salaried work should not be displayed on a resume, like it doesnât count as âreal workâ. It is real work, unless what you did had no bearing on your previous career or the one youâre pursuing. If youâre a marketing professional and volunteered to do marketing, wear it proudly and put it on your resume. The fact that you werenât paid is not as relevant as your accomplishments. Besides, non-profits would pay for that work to be done if they had the budget to do so. Temp work. Temp work is a great job-search method. The concern is that when you have multiple job assignments working for a variety of companies, how to put all of that down so it makes sense to the reader. The first thing you must realize is that you are working for the temp agency, even though your work is being done at a different business. Your business entry is made by using the temp agency and the type of work and work period. You can also outline the various companies you worked for, as well as your accomplishments under the temp agency as the business. Donât try to create an entry for each job assignment as it will get too busy and complicated to follow. Self-employment. For the business owner reentering the work force, this always feels intimidating; but it shouldnât be. You make an entry for your place of business as you would with any position you held for another company. List your company by name, dates and put down your work responsibility as âownerâ. As a business owner you usually wear many hats, giving you even more accomplishments and skills. Hone in on those that are most relevant to the position you are pursuing. A concern that some people have with hiring a business owner is their desire to work independently. You want to show that you can work collaboratively with others and successfully with a team. Indicating that information proactively will be to your benefit. Worked for a controversial person or cause. Whether this work is paid or unpaid, sometimes disclosing the information can create strong negative reactions. Especially in this political season, you never know where unfavorable judgment might exist. Depending on the specifics of the situation, you may want to leave the experience off your resume all together, especially if it doesnât create a massive gap. If it does create too big of an unexplainable gap, then consider toning down the details, like using initials instead of names or using a high level description such as: Political Campaign group. You will need to give this some thought to ensure you donât knock yourself out of the race by giving too much information. The best approach to your resume is to think through what the hiring manager is going to see and if it tells your work story effectively. We all too often get caught up in the details of our issues. (Source: shushipu)For the third Tibetan Rite, do as follows:Kneel down.Place your palms on the back of your thighs.Dip your head so that your chin presses onto your chest as you breathe out.Lean backwards as far as you can without falling over and lift your chin upwards as you breathe in.Make sure you contract your glutes and stretch your thighs. This will help you to get the most out of it and to avoid muscle strain.Surely this is what exercising is all about, isnât it?Do this between 3 and 21 times (like with the other Tibetan Rites).The Rabbit to Camel Pose is for moving energy from your solar plexus chakra to your heart chakra and also stretch your hips and abdominal wall. Again, breathing is important if you want to get this Tibetan Rite correct. Breathe in as you extend your chest cavity as itâs better for you.Thereâs a second variation of this pose you can do once youâve mastered the other:Start on your knees, with you r forehead on the floor and your hands crossed behind your back.Lift yourself up progressively, with your hands on your buttocks, and stick out your chest as much as you can.Tip: While more complicated, the latter method is also more energising so donât hesitate to occasionally change the Third Tibetan Rite so that you donât get bored.Find out how to include the Five Tibetan Rites in your next yoga session.The Staff To Upward Plank PoseNow itâs time for the Fourth Tibetan Rite, which is undoubtedly the most complicated one for beginners. You need to make yourself into a bridge while looking upwards.Hereâs how you do it:Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out in front of you.Place your hands by your pelvis.Raise your pelvis upwards as you breathe in and bend your knees so that your shins are vertical but your thighs are horizontal.Move back to your original position with your back straight and your legs outstretched as you breathe out.It should be noted that in this pos e, you have to have your pelvis between your hands. As you finish breathing out, press your chin against your chest.This rite works on your muscles, particularly those in your shoulders, back, and buttocks.You need to repeat this between 3 and 21 times. It can be tiring for beginners, so we recommend that you rest between the two stages if you feel tired.Tip: To get the most out of this pose, you should warm up beforehand.Upward Dog to Downward DogThis popular yoga pose is also from the Five Tibetan Rites and you'll need to concentrate when you do it.Start this pose by sitting on your heels, then going onto all fours:Spread your legs as wide as your hips.Spread your hands as wide as your shoulders.From there, do as follows:Raise your pelvis while keeping your legs straight.Press your hands and feet into the floor while keeping your chin against your chest as you breathe out.Lower your pelvis, contracting your buttocks, and raise your head upwards as you breathe out. The Downward Dog is one of the more famous yoga poses. (Source: AndiP)To get the most out of this pose, make sure you can feel the stretching in the backs of your thighs and your back. This can be really relieving.The Upward Dog to Downward Dog can stretch your entire body and free your mind. This is a good pose for those who suffer from back pains.Repeat this between 3 and 21 times. The same goes for this rite as the others; work your way up to more sets. This is the most liberating of the Five Tibetan Rites, which is why itâs the last one.Tip: if youâre just getting started and arenât flexible enough to do this, you might want to bend your arms a bit.Most yogis, regardless of their age, can do the Five Tibetan Rites without too much training!You need to practise these poses in the same order every time. Use a humidifier while you sleep to keep your throat hydrated overnight, and take a long, hot shower the morning of the performance, because the steam will reduce swelling as you inhale. Gargle, steam, be silent, and have a big cup of hot tea immediately before you go on stage. Odds are, youâll make it through. Always Warm Up: Use the following warm ups that are specifically designed for sick singers. During: Donât force it rely on what your voice teacher has taught you and make smart decisions. Adapt pitches if possible, change the key so the song is lower, or if you have control over the repertoire, choose a song that is reliable, has a limited range, and is easy on your vocal cords. This will save your voice the strain of singing high notes while swollen. And remember, sometimes itâs better to cancel than to risk strain or have important ears hear you when you arenât at your best. After: Donât relive every moment of the performance. So talk yourself down off that âIâll never sing againâ ledge, and just stay home and be quiet for as long as you can stand it. Trust me, everyone you know will thank you for sparing them from your germs. Also, remember that whispering is worse for your voice than speaking out loud, so donât even bother. Silence is golden, so make it a fun game of charades or grab a blanket and hunker down for a Netflix marathon. 2. Hydrate. It takes around 24 hours for the water you drink to actually refresh your vocal folds. That means if you have a lesson or a performance coming up, drink lots of water the day before. Of course, drinking water any time is helpful, especially when its warm. Itâll make your throat feel better and help you heal in the long run. If your scratchy throat is unexpected and you need to hydrate right away, steam is the only thing that works immediately. Boil a pot of water, bend over it, cover your head with a towel and inhale the hot air. We wonât tell anyone how weird you look while youâre doing it. 3. Show your throat some love. There are some great tricks to really speed your throatâs recovery. Try gargling with a mixture of salt, warm water, and a little apple cider vinegar. Have white fish or chicken breast and lots of vegetables and non-acidic fruits. Chicken noodle soup is momâs go-to food when youâre sick for a reason. Chicken, veggies, warm broth, and bland noodles are a perfect combo for an ailing throat. 5. Talk to the experts. Still not feeling better? Itâs time to turn to the professionals you trust. Ask your voice teacher for exercises that can help you, like humming while blowing bubbles into a glass of water through a straw. See your primary care physician and an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist who can take pictures of your vocal folds in action. And of course, follow the instructions given to you by these experts! If they say stay quiet, stay quiet. If they say hum instead of sing, hum instead of sing. If they tell you to drink more fluids and get some rest⦠well, you get the idea. You can do your own thing and work at your own pace. All that is shattered as youâre handed your new project that requires â" gasp â" collaboration with your co-workers. Youâre going to have to talk to them, spend time with them, work alongside them? Okay, maybe that entire scenario is just a tad dramatic. But everyone knows that feeling where youâre finally forced out of your comfort bubble and you have to work alongside a group of folks, people you may have seen every day but know little about. Itâs not easy breaking that barrier. What do you say? How do you share and collaborate? What should you keep to yourself? Sadly, youâll have to find the answer to a lot of the questions you have floating around inside your head on your own. Thatâs the nature of being collaborative: You need to learn to adapt. Donât Be Afraid to Ask Questions Look, weâve all heard that saying, âNo question is a dumb question,â and every single one of us knows itâs not true. There are many, many dumb questions. That creates blinding fear that youâre going to be the one, the dumb person to ask the silliest question ever. Donât be afraid. Who cares if the question you have to ask is stupid or not? If you have a question, then get clarification from someone, anyone. Itâs important, and chances are someone else had the exact same question you did â" they were just too scared to ask. Collaboration requires communication, and one of the best ways to communicate is to ask a question and pose a discussion, so donât be afraid to do so. 4. Force Yourself to Stand Out As an introvert, thereâs no way around it: You are going to have to come out of your safety bubble. Donât waste time trying to figure out when and where is the best time to do it. Just jump. Force yourself to stand out by any means necessary. If this means being the one to speak up first, then do it. If it means being the first one to ask questions or make suggestions, do it. Get out there and make yourself be a part of the team, whether you enjoy it or not. 5. Donât Underestimate Your Mad Skills You are at your job for a reason. Your ideas have weight and most likely will help your team. Your opinions matter and may save you a lot of hassle. Your presence matters, and your team would be worse off without you there. You already know you have a lot to contribute, and that means thereâs a ton you can do to support your team, so do it! 6. Disagreements Are Going to Happen No one ever sees eye to eye, and when a team of professionals works together, thereâs always going to be someone that disagrees. So long as the âconflictâ is not negative in nature and no one is attacking the others, disagreements will help you and your team perform better. It pushes you and the others to think outside the box and find solutions to problems instead of just settling on a particular decision or action. Donât be afraid of disagreements or conflict.
